A fresh wave of dealmaking is sweeping through North America’s lithium industry as developers race to lock down assets and scale up for soaring demand. The latest move, a proposed merger in northern Quebec, signals how strategic the scramble for homegrown lithium has become.

In December 2025, Li-FT Power agreed to acquire Winsome Resources in an all-share transaction valued around A$180 million. If approved by shareholders, regulators, and the courts, the deal would combine both companies’ holdings in Quebec’s James Bay region, creating one of the most expansive lithium footprints on the continent. Winsome shareholders would receive 0.0816 Li-FT shares for each of their own.

For Li-FT, the logic is clear. Electric vehicles, energy storage, and clean technologies are driving demand skyward, but investors now favor companies that can prove scale and efficiency. By consolidating neighboring properties, the combined firm hopes to streamline exploration, reduce overlap, and offer a stronger growth story to markets eager for domestic supply.

James Bay has emerged as a prized hub for lithium developers. Its appeal lies in a stable regulatory environment, abundant hydroelectric power, and proximity to North American battery and auto plants. The transaction also covers the Galinée lithium project, which is expected to close under a related agreement.

Backing from Lithium Royalty Corp, a major investor with stakes across the region, adds financial weight to the deal. Analysts see the move as part of a broader shift toward consolidation, as capital flows to players big enough to weather commodity cycles and deliver long-term supply security.

Challenges remain. Regulatory approvals, integration hurdles, and local partnerships will test the merged group’s execution. Yet most observers agree that as competition intensifies, those who scale first in North America’s lithium heartland will help define the industry’s next chapter.
